Important: Troop 8 no longer provides tents for campouts, so bring your own tent (buddy up with another Scout if needed).

For the River

Rafting and kayaking have slightly different gear needs, since rafters hand off their stuff at the outfitter while kayakers keep everything with them on the water.

Rafting the Ocoee:

  • Swimsuit (a long-sleeve rash guard or under-armor top is great, since the water is cold)
  • Water shoes or old tennis shoes (flip-flops are not permitted)
  • Sunscreen (leave it in the car at the outfitter)
  • Towel (leave it in the car at the outfitter)
  • Sunglasses with a strap (optional)

Life jackets and helmets are provided by the outfitter, so you don’t need to bring your own. A carabiner water bottle isn’t needed for rafting; there’s nowhere to clip it on the raft, so leave it in the car with your towel and sunscreen.

Kayaking the Hiwassee: everything stays with you on the kayak, so these five matter most:

  • Swim trunks or swimsuit
  • Water shoes (flip-flops are not permitted)
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle with a carabiner clip (to clip onto the kayak)

For Camping

  • Tent (yours or shared with a buddy; not provided this trip)
  • Sleeping bag or bedding, and a sleeping pad
  • Flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries
  • Fan (campground can be warm at night)
  • Toiletries (biodegradable soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth/towel)
  • Change of clothes
  • Insect repellent
  • Poncho or rain shell
  • Daypack
  • Scout Handbook (bring it, a great opportunity for rank sign-offs)

If We Hike

  • Hiking boots or sturdy shoes (tennis shoes work too)
  • Good socks
  • Water bottle or hydration pack
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Whistle

General Scout Essentials

  • Pocketknife / whistle
